Beginning the Process
During the first session, the person arrives and describes the reasons for seeking consultation.
The individual’s only task is to describe their current situation as openly and honestly as possible. In some cases, putting feelings into words can be difficult; therefore, a first session may also contain many silences.
It is common during the first session for the therapist to ask questions in order to better understand the situation being presented.
The first session also includes discussion of fees, scheduling, and any other questions the person may have.
In subsequent sessions, usually three to four meetings, information is gathered about the current problem as well as the person’s family, social, work, and occupational history.
This allows for a more complete understanding of the individual’s context and current emotional state.
At the same time, it provides information that can help develop strategies for greater self-understanding, problem resolution, and symptom relief.
Treatment begins when both parties agree to proceed, based on clarifying the objectives or goals.
Treatment sessions consist of actively working through the situations, thoughts, and emotions that are troubling the individual.
The only task is for the individual to speak freely and without censorship about the ideas and thoughts that arise during the analytic session.
