What Is It?

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy with children and adolescents is a specialized therapeutic approach. It is based on the theory and principles of Psychoanalysis. The therapeutic technique is specifically designed for work with children, adolescents, and their families.

Beginning the Process

Children

The first session is conducted with the parents. During this initial appointment, the psychologist seeks to understand the situation affecting the child and concerning the family. Relevant aspects of the child’s development are also explored.

Adolescents

The first session is conducted with the adolescent. During this initial appointment, the psychologist seeks to understand the situation affecting the adolescent, as well as relevant aspects of their current way of life.

Children

 

Three to four sessions are conducted with the child.

Adolescents

 

Three to four sessions are conducted with the adolescent, along with one session with the parents.

After completing the previous steps, the professional provides recommendations for addressing the presenting concerns.

In some cases, brief guidance for the parents is sufficient. In other cases, direct therapeutic work with the child or adolescent is recommended, in addition to consultation with the parents or caregivers.
